Physician Services

Message from the Chief of Staff

At Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre (SLMHC), we are fortunate to be part of a community with more than 40 active physicians, all of whom have hospital privileges while also engaging in private practice within town clinics and/or in our northern communities.

In addition, we have approximately 50 locums and a number of visiting specialists who supplement and add to our physician services. Currently, these specialists include Orthopedics, Ear, Nose & Throat, and Psychiatry. We hope to build our pool of visiting specialists and are actively seeking specialists in internal medicine and paediatrics.

Our physicians have come to SLMHC by submitting documentation on their education, training and special skills. All references are thoroughly checked, and we ensure that all licensing and insurance is in place. Only then are hospital privileges granted. Most of our physicians are contracted through Sioux Lookout Regional Physicians' Services

We are fortunate to have two general surgeons and a radiologist at SLMHC. Most of our medical staff are family physicians, many of whom have taken leadership roles in areas of special interest within the hospital. These areas include obstetrics, orthopaedics, anaesthesia, mental health, sports medicine, exercise and stress testing, chemotherapy, withdrawal management and addictions medicine, ambulatory care, long-term care, and emergency.

SLMHC is a teaching hospital, each year providing full 3rd year education to as many as five students of the Thunder Bay campus of the Northern Ontario School of Medicine. This is a core teaching function and an exciting and challenging opportunity for our physicians.

We are proud of the research activities that take place within SLMHC. Opportunities for research and publication are diverse, including many projects centering on cross-cultural care. The following documents are available for viewing on line:

Research Compilation 2007 - 2009
Research Compilation 2010 - 2012
Aboriginal Maternity Care Resourcebook 2012 (62MB)

We encourage you to consider Sioux Lookout Meno Ya Win Health Centre as the place to build your career. In addition to providing medical service to a thriving community and an extensive area, our physicians have the opportunity of taking leadership roles, teaching and mentoring medical students and initiating and/or participating in exciting and innovative research opportunities. Involvement in all areas of the hospital allows you to participate in different aspects of patient care, an opportunity not available in larger centers.

Sioux Lookout is a great place to live and work. It's wonderful to have the opportunity to provide direct service to people at the community level and to be able to work in a state-of-the-art hospital at the same time. There’s something very special about that.

Please call me at (807) 737-6538. I'd love to talk to you about our hospital and our community.
